The original
Pacific
Heights
duplex from the 40’s was claustrophobic.
It had small rooms and an exterior central atrium open to the sky which
was functionally obsolete and constricted the spatial flow of the house.
By reclaiming that space for the interior, removing walls and creating
openings, the kitchen, dining room and living room were combined into one great
free-flowing living space, dominated by a huge central solarium.
The entry was expanded, the living room remodeled and the dining room
opened up on three sides, with the fourth wall mirrored to visually expand the
room. The kitchen was redone with
natural woods, stainless steel and tile, with a breakfast bar opening to the new
family room created from the former atrium.
