Starting with a two-unit Victorian in the Marina , both flats were combined into one home with living spaces deconstructed and expanded to bring more light and openness to the interiors.  To retain the second unit, unused space behind the garage was converted to an au-pair suite.  The wall between the separate entries was removed to create a grand entry, the staircase leading upstairs was rebuilt and opened to the entry and the longitudinal bearing wall of the hallway was replaced by decorative structural columns to open and expand the living and dining rooms.  Cross walls were removed to create one huge great room.  A new monumental see-through fireplace was added to visually separate the two functions while allowing the free flow of space between them.
